Yukikaze Vol. 2

Yukikaze's second volume continues to amaze visually. And there's even a little humanity strewn throughout the sombre setting this time around to make things interesting.

Where volume 1 seemed to concentrate on aerial battles to keep our attention, the second volume sets its sights on ideas and intrigue. With the alien force, known collectively as the JAM, now looking for a way to strike at humanity beyond our superior hardware, the human element is very much in play. With the Earth forces comprimised, no one knows who to trust or where to look for answers, but the true enemy is self doubt, especally for Yukikaze's pilot, Lt. Fukai.

The tone of the series remains as hard-edged as ever. The series' novel roots are clearly evident, and the mature handling of characterisation and pace make this series one for the adults. Devoid of, say, Gundam Seed's cartoony designs and teenage angst, Yukikaze is compelling because it doesn't go overboard. The humans are very restrained and in control against an enemy that can't be clearly understood. There are some extremely chilling moments in this volume, made all the more effective by our lack of understanding concerning the JAM's motives. Creepy stuff.

So if, like me, you found the first volume to lack character, this may well convince you hang around for volume 3. After the cliffhanger ending, I for one can't wait for the next instalment!

Extras are very light this time around - just trailers and clean opening/closing sequences.
