Another post-apocalyptic anime featuring hyper violence and a cute young
girl. But Alita contains many unusual elements which make it stand out
from the crowd, and it's not a little disturbing...
Alita is a cyborg, found on a scrap
heap by the kindly Dr Ido. He rebuilds her and from that moment on
Alita starts the journey of discovery about who and what she was.
At least, she does in the manga, and this is a kind of stripped down
compilation of volumes 1 and 2, with a couple of new characters thrown
in and a few taken out. The manga, by the way, is superb - thanks
Leah!
Alita soon meets up with Hugo, a dreamer who wishes to get to Zarem(or
Tiphares in the manga) the floating city where the wealthy and privileged
live, high above the wastelands below. From there, the story takes
a meaningful and disturbing twist into how far one can go to attain
the dream before the very means of achieving it become the barriers.
The most disturbing thing about Alita is the fragility of the human
body. You certainly get to see plenty of the inner and outer body
here, but this was creepy to say the least, especially at the end
where the fate of one of the characters is quite unnerving...
8/10 - Disturbing, in a fascinating way...
