Reiko from Comic Party - Cute, ne?

B U B B L E G U M  C R I S I S  D V D 1

t's been a long while since I bought an anime video, having lost myself over the years to the more western animation shows - but I thought I'd come back for a fave. At the turn of the UK Manga/Anime revolution there was one series which has stuck in my mind ever since. Being a Blade Runner and cyber punk fan, seeing selected episodes of the Bubblegum Crisis series really appealed to me. Now with the turn of the Millenium (blah blah) and with the birth of the DVD revolution we are granted a digitally mastered version of the Knight Sabers adventures - Wahoo! (ahem).

The animation, quoted as being digitally remastered, is not as crisp as I'd have liked. Granted, I wasn't expecting a Star Wars remaster (CGI boomers anyone?) in sharpness stakes, but I did have to bare in mind the series is 10 years old and still stands up against the quaility and stories of today. Over the course of the 3 episodes of this first disc, I found the quality did get better (bring on the next DVD!) but this would be down to budget rather then cell cleaning and digital enhancing.

The key great thing about DVD's is that they can carry multi sound channels, the director and star babbling about how they ate cheese cake on the day of filming of the scene or even another language. Anime really comes into it's own in this regard. If your a die hard boffin, you can read the English subs with original language or if not, listen to the quite good (by anime voice over standards) dubbing. Listening, on the other hand, to the dubbed music is a VERY strange thing may I just state. As I had only heard the hummable original language version a number of years ago, I found the westernised song dub a tad unnerving (the end credits are in fact cringe worthy).

The DVD-ROM multimedia software which comes with disc is of a very standard affair to any one who has ever bought a DVD with computer content. It comprises of the cel art gallery - about 20 high quality pictures, production notes and the song lyrics. These, I'm informed, are the same as the ones supplied with the original VHS release. No notes are on what lies ahead for future MVM BGC releases, if they were to include a screen saver, original sketches or trailers for other releases, this would liven the very standard extras up.

Overall, this is a treat. If your original tapes are grainy (or even if they're not), this disc is worth upgrading to.

9.5/10 For the film
