Futuristic
Sci-Fi where convicted criminals are offered time off their sentences
if they become policemen, kept in line with explosive collars. It's
a novel concept that's wonderfully explored through each episode,
of which there are three - one for each protagonist. This gives the
characters ample room to shine, none more so than the cyber-gothic
tale of Benten in episode three.
It's a stylish and beautifully animated
thriller in the style of Blade Runner, where neon skylines dominate
the landscape, cops wear trench-coats and computers have personalities.
To call this cyber- noir is probably a little pretentious, but it
really is slick and memorable, helped no end by the superior touch
of the Madhouse studio. The stories themselves are gripping - both character
and action oriented at once, they pull you in and keep you watching
right to the end. The integrity of the series is marred only by the
over the top swearing - not because it's offensive, but because it's
unintentionally hilarious.
Each protagonist gets an episode to themselves, with the the others
providing support. Its an excellent format, and one that helps flesh
out the characters very nicely. Despite being the worst types of criminal
scum, they still seem to have more loyalty and morals than the police
chiefs they serve. It helps that all 3 are so disparate in their personalities.
Son Goku is the hothead of the bunch, whilst Gogul is a highly intelligent
computer hacker, a fact seemingly hidden by his huge frame, and Benten
is the androgynous martial artist who looks to the stars for his future.
Despite that one slight glitch, it's one of my top ten favourite anime
released in this country to date (in my opinion) and if you've got
a VCR, get this. You won't f**king regret it! ^_^
Manga have now released all 3 episodes on one tape, which makes it
excellent value for money, and by far the best of the Manga Cyberpunk
collection.
8/10 - Slick and stylish.
