There seems to be a heck of a lot of Go Nagai fans about, and I've always wondered why. Okay, so he may have done one or two gems in writing history, but nothing that warrants a fan base as big as his. Why the shallow, gore-filled, near interchangeable tales seem to be popular is beyond me, so perhaps I'm being a little harsh when it comes to reviewing his latest title to hit our shores, The Devil Lady.

Much like Go Nagai's earlier titles, such as The Devil Man, this proves once again that Go Nagai's writing skills can't really go beyond the "Monster-of-the-week" format. Our reluctant hero is cursed with the ability to change into a super powered demon against their will, and so begin to use their powers for good. It really doesn't get much better than that, so don't bother watching this expecting much.

Admittedly, there are some good points to Devil Lady, the first being the distinct art style typical of Go Nagai, his monster designs are truly surreal, and have almost a twisted beauty to them. Secondly, the dub is of quite a high standard. The dubbing ADV have been doing recently has impressed even the more cynical anime fans, and Devil Lady is equally as impressive as ADV's other offerings. Lastly, the animation, its crisp, vibrant images are pretty smooth, giving a nice OAV sheen to the whole series.

The DVD features are basically what we have come to expect from ADV. A clean opening and a clean closing are there for the perfectionists, and some of the original artwork is included too. Okay, so it's hardly hours of fun, but at least something has been included.

The Devil Lady is definitely nothing special, and even though it has a similar femme fatale quality as his hits like Cutey Honey, this type of show can't really compete in today's UK anime scene.

4/10 - An average Go Nagai action romp. Fans of Devil Man might get a kick out of it, others should avoid.
