Reiko from Comic Party - Cute, ne?

D E V I L  M A N - T H E  B I R T H

Long ago at the very birth of the Earth existed a demon world where aggressive beasts killed and hunted each other in order to gain the slayed demons powers. A kind of perverse version of Darwin's theory of evolution.

In present time these demons are entombed in ice glaciers hidden in caves and canyons located in the South Pole. But with global warming these demons are being released and soon all will be set free once again to ravage and rule the earth as they did so long ago.

It is up to a teenage boy named Akira and his old best friend Ryo to defeat these demons. But there is one catch, in order for a human to fight against a demon he must
meld and become one with the beast. Akira successfully joins with The Demon King Amon to form Devilman. Bring on a massive demon brawl in the middle of a disco with plenty of blood as Amon rips apart humans that have been taken over by demons.

Devil man was originally an anime T.V series first screened in 1972. In 1987 Devil Man was revived for a two-part OAV. The dub for this is okay but Manga Entertainment thought it might be appropriate to add a lot of swearing which is not present in the original Japanese version. The action scenes and fight scenes are good and it must have been tough thinking of all those different and imaginative ways to slay a demon.

It's a very dark and violent story with a gorgeously animated prehistoric demon world and, in my opinion,  some of the best monster designs seen in anime. A warning though, this is not for the faint hearted!

8/10 - If you're after a short, fun, fast and gory anime this is the one!!
