Having supplied us with the
Flash incarnation of the pair, ADV has decided to release the original
80's version for Western audiences.
Each tape has two 30 minute stories, each providing a seperate case
for teh pair to solve - this allows the buying public to buy the best
tapes and miss out the poorer ones (tape 4) without getting lost on
any kind of story arc.
The series
is entertaining rather than laugh out loud funny, and the action scenes
are solid and generally well directed.
The second episode on the first tape is a good example of the series
as a whole - after nabbing a felon trying to smuggle something out
of the lab where he works, the Pair promptly lose the cargo, and "something"
turns out to be a robotic killing machine set to annihilate everything
after one hour of activation. The best thing about this episode is
the spate of planned robberies by assorted gangs, all of which are
dressed for Halloween and foiled by the Pair's chase. Solid stuff.
This episode also wins a prize for smuttiest incidental dialogue,
when a (very cute) female robber dressed up as Alice In Wonderland
demands "Fill me up, big boy!" Certainly Madam ^.^
The series is a long standing fan favourite, but its been so long
now that the series has lost its lustre a little. The designs are
nice, but a little dated, and the animation is also showing its age
a little. I can see younger fans, bought up on a diet of more modern
and sharper anime dismissing this due to its looks, but that would
be a mistake - its easily better than some of the more recent titles.
I've never heard the original Japanese voice track, but the American
dub makes it sound like Clueless with guns. Although it's not a bad
thing, it's still a little detractive from the film. Overall it's
entertaining stuff.
7/10 - Solid rather than splendid, if you want guns and gals,
go get it.
