I’m not a massive fan of the
Dirty Pair, so I thought it’s probably time I looked at one of ADV’s
Flash releases to see if it could change my mind.
The first episode was okay, but it wasn’t all that funny – the tale
of an obsessed Yuri fan who creates a Yuri robot to stand in for the
real thing. Kei’s unfortunate intervention in a park leads to the
robot breaking down, and the real Yuri has to stand in. It relies
a lot on bodily functions and parts for its jokes, but they all fell
a bit flat on me. The episode does have one nice touch – amongst the
myriad of costumes Yuri dresses up in is the original outfit from
the teams earlier, non Flash adventures.
The second episode is better, as it
deals in straight forward action, as opposed to attempting wit. A
terrorist, hell bent on revenge against the Lovely Angels chief, Poporo,
invades 3WA headquarters and runs amok in a state of the art killing
machine. The
soundtrack is excellent, and the direction is well paced and creates
a believable sense of urgency. Even the dubbing is pretty good (probably
because it doesn’t concentrate too much on the Pair’s squeaky voices).
The chief’s voice actor, Donl Johnson, does a creditable job as Poporo,
and this episode alone makes the tape well worth getting.
The series at large is basically much the same - some episodes are
okay, others aren't so good, but there's nothing that stands out over
the range of tapes. I've condensed the reviews into this single page,
as all we've been doing is giving you the episode synopsis and saying
the same thing - its an okay action drama, but it won't convert anyone
new to anime, and it won't entertain much of the rest of us enough
to warrant a replay.
However, Basheer has one tape he'd like to draw your attention
to; 3:2
This (tape 3:2) is by far the best Dirty pair tape you can get, purely
because of what it offers. Unlike the previous Dirty pair tapes, you
get 3 episodes in a video, all offering different stories. But wait,
before I end this review I should also mention that the voice actors
are really talented, but then ADV are well known for their good dubs
( save Dragon-half ). The animation is also top notch, which just
makes this tape even better :) So then, I would highly recommend you
get your hands on this Dirty Pair tape - if you were only allowed
have ONE Dirty pair tape this would be it.
6/10 - A distinctly average series.
