I can't even pretend for a moment that
I liked this. Maybe it's just me, but I found it slow, predictable
and mind numbingly boring. Maybe that's harsh, but what the
heck is the fuss over this?
It's a comedy by the same people who bought you Tenchi Muyo! El Hazard
is the story of a school kid being swept off to a magical other world
featuring 9 year old lesbians, priestesses, cat armour and other stuff.
I can't really put my finger on what was wrong with it exactly
- it had so little impact I didn't really care anyway. I just sat
through the whole thing waiting for the wacky humour to start, and
by the time it managed to raise a smile it was over. I just didn't
give a damn about anyone in the series whatsoever, and all the plot
'twists' were so blindingly obvious that you'd have to be brain dead
to miss them ambling onto your screen.
Pioneer have a wealth of top quality titles available in the UK, sadly
I don't think this is one of them. Support Pioneer by buying Tenchi,
Iria, Moldiver, or something.
The last time I was this unimpressed was with a salad I'd ordered
from a Lloyds No.1 cafe. I'd paid a fortune for it and got almost
nothing for my money. Kinda like this tape actually. If anyone liked
it, send me a review, 'cos I know I'm in the minority with this one.
I honestly can't give this a score, it wouldn't be fair...
Sam Brown Says:
This was one of the highlights of the last five years for me. Hiroki
Hayashi and Ryoei Tsukimura were responsible for much of Tenchi Muyo's
early success, and they continue the winning formula here. Fantasy,
adventure and romance collide head on with stunning design and production
values, plus a wonderful orchestral score from Seiko Nagaoka. Pioneer
provide a decent dub, with only the occasional jarring note, nothing
you can't put up with. Unless you're a hardcore mecha or ultraviolence
freak I cannot recommend this one highly enough. Beg, borrow or steal
these three tapes, they are fabulous.
