The
Angels have come to punish mankind, and only the secretive organisation
NERV and it's incredible weapons of war, the Evangelions, can save
us from the Final Impact! Neon Genesis Evangelion is a character driven
epic that looks at the world through an introverted 14 year old, who
is forced by circumstance to pilot one of the giant EVA's.
To be honest, I didn't think much of this at first. It seemed slow,
dull and woefully under budget. Sure, the designs were wonderful,
the music fitting and the Eva's quite awesome, but the animation seemed
stilted - long drawn out scenes where little moved, and when the action
did start, it was soon over.
It was the third tape which really started the series running though
- the plot seemed to take off, the characters came to life and the
interaction was more fluid. With the subsequent tapes, you become
immersed in political intrigue, revelations and action that's different
and cleverly designed to reveal a little more about the EVA's, their
pilots and their creators each time.
What really sets EVA apart is the view of the world through a thought
provoking lens, where human interaction, religion and science is analysed
and turned on its head. Wonderful stuff, and well worth showing to
anyone who doubts that animation can be as intelligent and well scripted
as the best political thrillers.
The ending won't be to everyone's taste, and there was plenty of controversy
over it, fuelled by End of Evangelion, the theatrical movie which
retold the ending as the creators originally intended, which was incredibly
violent and apocalyptic. As a study of science fiction, religion,
intrigue and deceit, its a superb piece of writing.
10/10 - Epic in scope, beautifully realised and wonderfully composed
- a true classic, and officially available in the UK too!
