On first looking at the cover I knew this was going to be an excellent
anime – I don’t know why, but a mad smiling guy with a
cross in his mouth creates a really good impression.
The main character is Nosferatu Alucard (the guy on the front cover),
both a vampire and vampire hunter who serves Integral Wingates Hellsing,
the main person in charge of the 'Hellsing' organisation.
Order 1:
This is simply an introduction for Nosferatu, as he is assigned to
a mission which gives us a glimpse as to what his character is like.
When he is assigned on his next mission to kill a mad vampire priest,
he meets Celes Victoria, who is working for a normal police force
unit at the time, also assigned to tackle the priest – unfortunately
her unit is overwhelmed and she is held captive by the priest. Nosferatu
saves her and, at her request, turns her into a vampire!
All in all, not a bad way to start the series, with a quick and memorable
introduction to the characters and plenty of action on the side.
Order 2:
This is simply Victoria’s tale of coming to grips of what she
has become and her newfound abilities, such as super human strength,
the need to drink blood and sharper eyesight.
At the same time, two vampires go on a killing spree and Nosferatu
and the Hellsing army is sent to take them down. Not exactly huge
on the action front, but a good plot just the same, and a good showcase
for Victoria’s confused emotions as she comes to terms with
who and what she is.
Order 3:
Wow, this is why a bought the DVD! In this episode we meet Alexander
Anderson, servant of god and knife wielding maniac with a few tricks
up his sleeve. Anderson is sent on a mission to take out a vampire
but Nosferatu gets there first - the fight sequence is fast, smooth,
and just plain amazing to watch.
Summary:
The animation in the episodes is brilliant - it's simply a joy to
see how much detail they’ve lavished on the characters clothing,
appearance, weapons and backgrounds. And watching some of the fight
sequences and illusions is simply incredible.
The soundtrack is another bonus in these episodes, with a special
mention to the ending theme, Shine by Mr Big – its well worth
a listen (in fact you can find it in the downloads section –
its worth getting the DVD for the score alone - Ed)
The DVD in general is not too bad, the animated menus have been well
done, the extras include a character and scenery art gallery as well
as the ubiquitous previews for future ADV films. Also of note is the
English/Japanese soundtrack – always nice to have a choice!
10/10 - Vampire action flick which is smooth in animation,
excellent on soundtrack and not bad on plot either
