The classic fantasy series about a group
of young heroes trying to save the land of Lodoss from the invading
armies of Emperor Beld.
This is a complex and politically motivated anime, which is rich in
character design and atmosphere, and although the build up is slow,
it soon flourishes into a fascinating fantasy tale.
The UK release suffers mostly from the dub, which is stilted and a
bit on the boring side. There's not too much audible effort in the
acting, and Slain in particular comes off badly, sounding like even
he's bored of what's going on. Lodoss deserved better than this, and
as the sub is only available on import, it's the best the UK is going
to get.
The animation works pretty well, and the character designs are first
rate - sharp, beautifully rendered and instantly memorable. Lodoss
looks utterly fabulous, and it's easy to why it's so popular amongst
fans.
However, don't let the dub put you off too much - the story is strong
enough to carry itself regardless, and its certainly a must for anyone
who like a ripping and intelligent fantasy yarn.
7/10 - The voice acting lets this down, but if the story is
anything like the TV series, it'll be worth persevering with.
Whilst Lodoss may no longer be distributed in the UK, its readily
available on import, and bring and buy tables at anime cons. If you
can pick it up for a decent price, its certainly recommended. Or you
could check out the Lodoss TV series available on import...
