This came as a bit of a surprise, I
don't mind saying. With the rash of recent beat-em-up titles flooding
the market, such as Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Tekken and Toshinden,
Metal Angel Marie arrives in time to show the hapless UK newcomer
that there's more to the medium than fists.
Hikaru is a lonely guy who decides to build himself a robotic companion
to stave off the loneliness. Unfortunately he bases the design on
the secret love of his life, Marie. I say unfortunately because Hikaru
seems like a bit of a weirdo in the first episode, and I'd be seriously
worried about his mental health were he non-fictional. Still, ignoring
that, the series sets itself up for some romantic fun and pulls it
off quite well. It's sweet and harmless, but if like me you're a bit
of a romantic then you'll enjoy this.
The
dubbing is good, the animation works nicely and the character designs
are simple and attractive. Of all the tapes that ADV have sent me
to review recently, this is the first I'll be going out to buy
to add to my collection. It's a perfect slice of romantic fun that's
good value for money (there were only three episodes ever made, and
they're all on here) so there's no excuse really. There's even some
fisticuffs for those who like a bit of action. Go get it!
8/10 - Fun, romantic and daft. It's a pleasure to see this type
of anime in the UK, well done ADV.

For
another young metal madam struggling to find her place in the world,
take a look at Alita. Granted, she's discovering herself by kicking
the ass of everyone she can get he mitts on, but each to their own.
