| Nadesico was one of the first anime that I ever watched. I loved it to pieces, mainly for the comedy, the action and of course, the much needed element of any sci-fi anime (when you first get into anime), big robots. The characters were lovable, with Yurika constantly chasing after her love Akito, and who can forget the sublime Gekigangar? So why has it taken me this long to finally watch the film of the series I loved? OK-ish reviews and the possibility that the film could destroy the series that I hold dear. But its time to discover what the film is all about. The film is set two years after the events of the series. The Earth and Jovians are good buddies and everyone is Boson jumping. Of course, someone doesn’t like this alliance and wants to control Boson jumping for their own “evil” purpose. The call goes out to Ruri, now captain of the Nadesico B to assemble the old Nadesico crew and kick some ass. What we get is a film that shows how film production values can improve the visuals of a series, but not necessarily the plot. Trying to show so many of the old characters in such a short space of time gives them very little screen time, and a good portion of the film focuses on Ruri and her assembling the crew as well as figuring out what happened to my favourite pair of characters. The plot does move along at a decent pace, but at times feel pointless and you never really get a good idea of what the characters from the series have been up to in the two year gap between the series and film. There are some classic Nadesico moments re-lived, may favourite is the “how and why” sections that I loved about the series. Fans will see plenty of in-jokes like Gekigangar keyrings. But I feel that the film is quite a huge departure from the series. The series was full of comedy, which is what made it fun to watch. The film tries to go for a darker tone in places and it does suffer for it. You have to question why certain events and characters are acting like they do, even if the film does give a few cheap answers. In the end though, fans of the series will inevitably watch Prince of Darkness and should at least enjoy the comic moments. Newcomers to Nadesico will more than likely be overwhelmed with all the characters appearing and series-based jokes taking place. So the recommendation is, watch the series before the film. Nadesico: Prince of Darkness is a good film for the fans to watch, but its such a departure from the series that it may turn a few off it. 7/10 – A nice addition to the series, but the series is still the high point of Nadesico.
