Reiko from Comic Party - Cute, ne?

P A N Z E R  D R A G O O N

So, Panzer Dragoon then. Based on the Sega game of the same name, this is a 30 minute self contained story set in the same world as the video game. It borrows locations from the game itself and probably the music as well (it sounds like computer game music, but I haven't heard the soundtrack - safe to say it'd be an easy and logical thing to do).

The video uses plenty of CGI, but don't expect Macross Plus here - the CGI isn't terribly convincing, and it really clashes against the traditional cel animation techniques it tries to merge with. To be fair, this is due to age rather than incompetence. To be fair to the anime, the character designs themselves are bright and colourful, so that's in its favour.

However, the biggest problem here is the script - it's as cheesy as hell - in fact, it's the king of the cheesy scripts. I sat in slack jawed disbelief as the most absurd lines I've ever heard were delivered in such a cringe-worthy, gung-ho and yet stilted fashion that I was trying desperately to keep a straight face. The fault lies with the main character Kyle, whose idiotic "lets have at 'em" kind of banter is pretty unbearable. The other characters are passable but no great shakes, although in some cases that's due to lack of screen time - if some of the characters had been given more to say then doubtless they'd be as terrible as Kyle.

The paltry 30 minutes don't know what to do with themselves at the end of the day. Although Manga Max assures us the game has a rich back-story, this doesn't reflect it. In the end, the story is about two dragons having a scrap. No motives, no history, no point and not much change out of £15. Not much of a deal is it?

3/10 - It's almost bad enough to be fantastical. ADV have far better releases demanding your cash.

 Sod this, try Dragon Half!
A great send up of everything fantastical - its zany, unpredictable and features the only ending theme tune about making an omlette ever (hopefully!).
