Now this is an interesting idea, take the cast of an established show and use them in a new setting. Pretty Sammy is a parody of all the magical girl series that appeared in the wake of Sailor Moon. The same characters are used, but their relationships have changed, for instance Tenchi is Sasami’s brother, Mihoshi and Kiyone work in Sasami’s mothers music shop and Ryoko has no super powers and is just a schoolgirl, as is Aeka (they’re both after Tenchi still). The story centres on Sasami, who is selected by Tsunami to be her champion. Apparently there is some sort of power struggle going on in Jurai as to who will be the next leader, as another Juraian selects a girl called Michelle to be her champion. In the great tradition of magical girls, Sasami is given a cute magical pet. In this case it’s a talking cabbit called Ryo Ohki – yes that’s right, Ryo Ohki talks in this story! As for the production, its fine, the animation is what you’d expect in a Tenchi episode, and the voice acting is fine as the US voice cast of Tenchi Muyo worked on this as well.  The
only thing I did not like about this tape was the voice actress for
Michelle / Misa. As Michelle she has a sort of barely audible breathless
pant, and as Misa she has a French accent that indicates that she’s
possibly related to Peter Sellars…Pioneer obviously like the Pretty Sami idea, She appears in one of the Tenchi OAVs, the Tenchi TV series and finally a TV series all of her own, but it didn’t really do much for me. Buy it if you’re a Tenchi nut, you’ll either love it or hate it. 7/10 Back to Menu |
