Psychic Wars is one of those films you love. Love to switch off, that is, as this must have been one of the longest, most painstakingly boring hour of my life, and this is supposed to be an action packed OAV. One young, handsome surgeon has to remove a cancer from a mysterious old lady. The cancer turns out to be an ancient curse that unleashes demons upon a world. Predictably, the feature involves lots of fighting, then more fighting in a different time and place, followed up by another batch fights and some horribly executed plot twists. Every last good idea that might have been slipped in there has been lost in a sea of forgettable characters and a pretty much awful selection of monster designs. The production values aren't exactly bad, but it's just that all the fight scenes seem totally boring, they lack true atmosphere, a true sense of excitement. Very little background music doesn't help, and the dialogue could easily have been ripped from one of those bland American action films that were so popular during the 80s. The dubbing is so horribly annoying and emotionless that it makes some of the plot seem totally meaningless. Ukyo and his girlfriend doesn't seem the least bit surprised when our hero realizes he has magical powers, and the demons, keen as they are to kill everything without real reason, seem to share the similar droning of their human counterparts. Due to the short length of the OAV, there is little room for character development and after watching it everything seems a little rushed, and after a half hour you really will just give up on it, as most won't care enough about what's going on to dignify it with their attention for longer than 30 minutes. Add to that the shoddy dub, lack of atmosphere and an uninspiring plot, this is one film you probably want to leave on the shelf. Get the similar, but far more enjoying Vampire Wars, it deserves your £10 more than this does. 4/10 - If you make it past the first half hour, you are a very strong person. NOTE: Of course, if you liked it on VHS or have seen it else where and you want it digitally remastered, then it IS recommended. Back to Menu |

For those with a penchant for badly drawn and animated post-boozer destruction,
try out Manga's other tape el-horrible, Fist of the North Star. Urgh.Read the review |
