Reiko from Comic Party - Cute, ne?

R E A D  O R  D I E

This may seem harsh to say but, "about bloody time" If this turns out to the only good release that Manga do this year atleast they picked one that will knock your socks off.

Yomiko Readman is not your average special agent. "The Paper" as she is known in the Library Special Operations division would rather spend most of her time with her beloved books than be a secret agent. While this doesn't make her the ideal candidate for her role, her skills mean she is given the mission of finding the person stealing rare scriptures of Beethoven and using some of histories most famous personalities to do it. At least she gets some help on the mission in the shape of sexy leather-clad "Ms Deep" (read into THAT codename what you will!) and gruff arms expert Mr Drake.

When I first looked at the back of RoD's DVD cover it didn't look to be that great. How wrong I was. Read or Die impresses from the start, with ambitious set pieces, superb characterisation and never a dull moment. It seems to have been paced to keep your attention for every second, which is no bad thing considering the quality of what you're watching. For some anime trivia, know that RoD was, until the recent Macross Zero, the most expensive OAV ever made. It shows, and the paltry sum you pay for the priveledge of watching such a groundbreaking piece of work makes the deal that much sweeter.

Animation, character design and scenery are top-notch, with the main characters and bad guys being particuarly outstanding. Though why one of the bad guys had no pupils in he's eyes is beyond me. The powers that some of the characters have do border on something you would see in a Marvel film, but it just adds to the story rather than being thrown in for the hell of it.

Read or Die is easily the best thing that Manga has released all year, not that it had any competition to begin with.

10/10 - Outstanding. If you buy nothing else this year, buy this.
