Reiko from Comic Party - Cute, ne?

T E N C H I  M U Y O  I N  L O V E  (D E L E T E D)

The film is based on the TV series continuity, which you'll have seen if you have access to Cartoon Network. However, its set up in such a way that if it weren't for Kiyone being present, you really wouldn't know.

The film is a time travel jaunt spurred on by Tenchi's disappearence from the timeline. As he gradually fades away, Washu traces the problem to the past and the death of Tenchi's mother - before he was born! In an effort to save Tenchi's mother from a premature death from the enigmatic space criminal Kain, the whole gang travel back to the 70's.

There are some huge plot holes in this film unfortunately, but it really doesn't matter. When a film drags you in like this, all you care about is the characters and what happens to them. It's witty, touching and cute in the right amounts.

Although there's not really a whole load of action, it manages to stand up just fine without it, and any fan of the characters will just enjoy the screen time given to their favourite characters. Even Sasami is given something useful to do, and even when the action is minimal, the amazing animation and beuatiful locations hold your interest.

Even with the action content set at minimal, the ending is pretty powerful stuff, and actually quite moving. The English voice cast do a great job, as they're now settled into their respective roles, and thanks to this the dramatic sequences and character nuances are everything a Tenchi fan has come to expect. Tenchi's mother in particlar is a wonderfully realised character and has gained her own following across the net.

In short, Tenchi just drips quality - even the tape is of a high standard, and it's been digitally mastered too! This is a great film, even for those who aren't massive Tenchi fans.

10/10 - Wonderful character driven drama/comedy. Well worth finding.

The original is still by far the best, so why not track down a copy of the original Tenchi Muyo OAV tapes. They pop up on Ebay occasionally...
