Akira. You’ve seen it, right? Chances are, your answer to that question was yes. If you haven’t seen Akira, stop right now, and get this DVD – how could you be missing out on such a phenomenal anime release? This re-release of Akira is the perfect time to get it if you haven’t seen it already, and the content of this DVD should be appealing if you’ve already seen this movie before. This is no ordinary re-release – the picture has been digitally re-mastered, and what a re-mastering it is! This simply blew me away upon watching – I remember Akira as having average animation, but looking like it had been ‘washed out’ throughout the entire film. Not any more, the video re-mastering has put an end to all that, using some highly advanced re-mastering techniques, they’ve managed to make a anime that was originally released in 1991 look like it could hold it’s own in comparison to most modern animes of today. It’s highly impressive, and anyone that’s watched they’re Akira video to death should just get this to see the quality of the video in this release. The producers also commissioned a new dub – but what is there to say about it? You’ve probably already made up your mind if you like dubs or not, if you do, you’ll like this dub, but if you don’t, never fear, the original Japanese audio layer has also been included on the DVD, as well as the original dub as well. The Story? It’s 2019 – 31 years since Tokyo was destroyed by a top-secret weapon in World War III, known only as ‘Akira’. Neo-Tokyo now stands in its place, a dark metropolis inhabited by hundreds of gangs and terrorists. The corrupt government maintains control over Neo-Tokyo by using the military, the only thing preventing total chaos and anarchy. ![]() Kaneda and Tetsuo, friends in a motorbike gang, are suddenly involved in the most secret of all secrets after Tetsuo is captured by the Military and subjected to many psychological experiments – giving him insane amounts of psychic power. Akira featured some fantastic scenes in it’s original release – the motorbike chases near the beginning of the film is one of the most memorable scenes you’ll ever watch in an anime. I was highly impressed with this release, just the quality of the video re-mastering alone is enough to make this a necessary purchase. 10/10 - A fantastic film, given a fantastic re-mastering. Make sure a copy of this ends up in your hands. Back to Menu |
