God is dead and there is War amongst Heaven and Hell! Alexiel and Rosiel were twin Angels were born of the Seraphita, the highest power next to God. They were both greatly beloved by God, but God chose Rosiel to be his favoured one and this drove Alexiel to revolt against God. She felt betrayed by God and led the Legions of Hell against God but was defeated. In her final act she banished Rosiel to Earth where his angelic form would slowly deteriorate over time into a infant. Her punishment for this was for her body to be sealed in a crystal and her soul to be continually re-incarnated into people who would live tragic lives and will die violent deaths. But God is now dead and without a God the world will cease to exist. Alexiel is destined to be the new Messiah... Angel Sanctuary is a three-part OVA based on the long-running Manga of the same name and as you can tell it is a very ambitious story. It is a gothic fantasy and twisted love story. The story starts with Alexiel's present reincarnation Setsuna Mudou and of his forbidden passion for his Sister Sara. With the various Angels and demons who are after him will Setsuna's love for Sara survive the against the odds? For me it is one of the best looking anime I've seen, making full use of technology available. The characters are beautifully done and the action when it arrives is excellent. The music is very atmospheric and in keeping with the story.
It has faults though, the 90 minutes is just not long enough to explore
fully the emotionally complex characters of especially Sara and Setsuna
and the basis for their attraction with each other. With its complex
characters and its themes of incest, homosexuality and drug abuse it
was a story that needed to be told much more in depth than the three
episodes that were made. I recommend it though if you like your anime to be dramatic, emotionally charged and of grand style. 8.5/10 - would have been higher had it been longer Back to Menu |

More end of the world action in Spriggan, an extremely stylish thriller
starring an unstoppable teenager. (Well at that age they're all unstoppable
aren't thay?)Read the review |
