Akari Kanzaki is the daughter of the legendary Cosmo Beauty, Tomoe Midoh. However, whether Akari can live up to that legacy is another matter. Clutzy, lazy and a bit of a crybaby, Akari seems doomed. However, where there is light, there is hope. Along with her best friend, Ichino Yanagida (affectionally known as Itchan), they try and compete for the University Satellite, where they could gain some glorious honour and prove themselves. The TV series differs a lot from the OVA, introduces a lot more characters, and is overall more fun because of it. Along with Princess Nine, it's one of the only commercially available sport animes in the US and is quite a good one to boot.
BAV's quality stems from it's variety of characters and
how they interact with each other. Akari and Itchan for example go through
many obstacles to prove their friendship, including competing against
each other. Akari has other hurdles, including the two favourites
to get in, the American Jessie Gurtland and her rival, a Russian (of
course), Ayla Vevarasa Rosnovsky. There are other stereotypical characters
as well, Itchan is a tomboy Osakan, you have the self-centred Chinese
girl, the feral African, and later on, a shy blunette and, well, Kris
needs a few hundred words to herself...The power of trust and friendship drives through the screen between many of the characters, this is also the first anime of Pioneer's that I managed to see all of, and the seiyuus (particularly Rio Natsuki (Akari)) steal the show, but it also showcases the excellent dubbing skills of Wendee Lee, Davis Lucas, Melissa Williamson and Ruby Marlowe, four anime mainstays who shine as Ichino, Grant Oldman, Ayla and Anna respectively. Sports anime is a minority, but this is certainly strong enough to hold it's own, and maybe even open the door to more. Comedy and even romance (NOTE: Most of the cast are girls... ^_^) add to it's brilliance. Recommended. 8/10 - You're almost there - yes, you've purchased BAV! Goal! Back to Menu |
