| I remember the first time I saw Cowboy Bebop - though the design and style were distinctive and achingly cool, I wasn't over-awed at the episodes I'd seen, finding them a bit predictable. However, that was only 3 episodes and a long time ago. What has since become clear, with more time to watch more episodes, is that Cowboy Bebop really has that rare commodity in anime these days - a blend of maturity and flair that manages to keep interest peaked and characterisation at the forefront of the show. Though there are (mostly welcome) comic moments, there are also elements of world weariness and inevetibility which you only get with a cast of people who are no longer eager teens, but well rounded individuals jaded by their lot in life. The story initially concerns Spike Spiegel and his partner Jet Black, a pair of bounty hunters who travel through space using their collective talents to make a living from catching those criminal elements unlucky enough to have a price on their head. In early episodes we're introduced to the sultry female thief Faye Velentine, whose charms are never quite enough to prevent her capture and frequent handcuffing in the Bebop's water closet... As time goes by she joins the crew, along with computer hacking genius Ed and Einstein, a super-intelligent Corgi... As mentioned earlier, Bebop is achingly cool - it drips style and panache, from the mecha designs (ranging from retro-looking space cruisers to orbital spcae stations that look like roulette wheels). Character designs are very cool (Faye's outfit in particular seems designed to capitalise on her assets) and the direction is both fast paced and extremely well thought out.
Like Trigun, later episodes take a dip into much darker themes, and
the atmosphere of these episodes is quite overwhelming at times, and
the series really does grab you from start to finish. One of the great things about Bebop is that most episodes are stand alone stories, so you can dip in and out if you want to, though you'll probably get swept away by the atmosphere of the series and end up watching it from start to finish anyway. 9/10 - Stylish, mature and rewarding. Not much more you can ask from any series really ^_^ Back to Menu |
