Anyone who ever thought that the cute, if rather irritating 'Cardcaptors' had anything in common with Card Captor Sakura, is in for a shock.

Card Captor Sakura, from CLAMP (Who are responsible for Rayearth and Angelic Layer to name but a few..), is the incredibly cute and colourful tale of Sakura Kinomoto, an athletic ten year old who excels in sports, (especially cheerleading).

One day at school she has a couple of strange visions, one of a little yellow creature, the other of a wand (which is pink). She returns to her home only to sense something strange coming from the basement, so, being intelligent, she decides to investigate, accidentally unearthing the book of the Clow, containing the Clow Cards, all which have a specific element (rain, fire, wind etc.). The little yellow creature she envisioned before appears, calling himself 'Keroberos' the protector of the Clow Cards, and tells Sakura she is a Card Captor, and it is her job to collect the cards she set free.

It's very typical shoujo fare, but it has been incredibly successful, despite it's more 'interesting' aspects. The main difference between this and the American version is very obvious. Most of the characters are gay. Sakura's brother is gay, her best friend Tomoyo appears to be gay, her rival Li, has a crush on the same person as her, who is gay with her brother. It's all a big horrible mess of emotions and homosexuality.

But really, it's not that important (is it?). The animation is lovely, it's big, bright and colourful. The plot is simple, yet there are enough silly twists to keep you interested. It is CUTE. Almost nauseatingly at some points. The characters don't seem to have any flaws in their personalities (except the obvious), everyone is perfect, and there is a lot of pink.

It's worth finding a couple of episodes..... just so you don't feel deprived.

8/10 - Cute and Cuddly ^_^

 Catch Sakura on the telly!
Yup, Card Captor Sakura made it to the UK on Nickleodeon and ITV. Pokemon opened the doors and Sakura was one of the myriad of game-based anime to make it to the UK. It did reasonably well, but being more of a girls carton than anything else, it didn't reach the dizzy heights of Pokemon or, more recently, Yu Gi Oh!. Very popular with cosplayers though...
