| Its quite easy to dismiss this as ‘another Evangelion clone.’ On the surface, it has all the elements which made Gainax’s classic- schoolboy hero (Kazuki) with natural mech piloting ability, several very attractive female characters around him, including the school idol Mitsuki, enigmatic and quiet alien girl D, and mothering character Yayoi. There’s even three ‘Core Robots’ and they’re fighting against an enemy that they were struggling to win against, before the arrival of Kazuki. However, the similarities end there, for the most part. The story is focuses on an artefact that was discovered at a construction site, where history split into two parallel realities when a worker was forced to make the decision between keeping the artefact he found and throwing it away. The problem is, Kazuki can see into this parallel reality- where war has broken out and giant robots battle in the streets of Tokyo. Of course, this all changes when a mad scientist uses a machine he’s been working on to accidentally send Kazuki into this parallel world.. where he finds himself piloting robots surprisingly well. Characterisation
is surprisingly good, and the series distinguishes itself very well
from its ilk. In fact, it looks and feels more like El Hazard than Evangelion,
most likely because of the light-hearted take on the story and the distinctive
designs of AIC’s best. Animation and art quality are also excellent-
with good use of CG on some of the battle scenes and for computer screens
and so on. The music is surprisingly catchy too…In all, this feels rather like El Hazard meets Evangelion… and it becomes something rather unique. Fans of mecha action may be disappointed with the comparative lack of action in Dual, but the strength of the characters and the dialogue more than makes up for it. 8/10 - Good English dub and DVD special features, too. Of course many people will tell you that there's only one pivotal genre
defining mech anime, and that's Evangelion. To be honest its just another
mech show with more ambition, great designs and more angst than usual
