F U R I  K U R I  ( F L C L)

Gainax, creators of the anime legend that is EVA, are back with another mecha show - but if you thought they were gonna calm things down, you're in for a rude awakening.

FLCL is a hard anime to describe - it's at once manic, bizarre and surreal, but within the context of itself, it makes perfect sense. The story sort of revolves around 12 year old Naota, who is one day run over by a Vespa, ridden by a bizarre girl called Haruko. Thereafter, his life takes a strange turn, not least because robots start to grow out of his head...

Although there is no fansub as such, Gainax have thoughtfully added English subtitles to the DVD edition, which means that we can order it and watch it early - as I write episode 4 of 6 has just been released, and since we so rarely get to see an anime translated so fast, it's a fantastic opportunity to see what's current in Japan. And what a show to demonstrate!

Furi Kuri uses state of the art CGI animation, but with a traditional cel finish - the result is crystal clear animation and incredible effects far beyond what we've seen in Lost Universe et al. The soundtrack is also fantastic, with music provided by ace Jpop band The Pillows - the Soundtrack is well worth getting hold of if you can find it.

I'd love to go on, but I'm running out of space - it's unique, witty and stylish, so track it down - raid your mates tapes, nag at anyone who has a copy, but get your copy now and feast your lucky orbs on its glory!

 ...or then there's EVA
Gainax's mecha masterpiece was no less anarchic, and it stands as the anime that made a mech sized footprint in the anime world. Well worth a look.
