| Based on the top selling manga by Tojru Fujisawa, GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) is a tale of a reformed bike-gang member trying to make it legit as a teacher - but not just any teacher. Onizuka has in mind a future whereby he is not only the greatest teacher the academic society has ever seen, but also a future surrounded by beautiful young girls... Luckily its a comedy and not a handbook for pedophiles looking for new ideas ^_^ So is it any good? Well, expectations weren't that high, despite its impressive credentials (the last episode was the highest rated show ever in Japan). I'm not really into wacky Japanese comedy, and it usually takes something with a whole lot more than crap gags to make me want to buy a series (Trigun had heart and a message, Kare Kano has feeling and great direction). So what's on offer in GTO? The comedy is very typically Japanese - a guy who's girl-mad, but has his heart in the right place. He's a bit of an oddball, but he jumps from perv to biker to teacher to hero in seconds, and its the sort of role that would be extremely hard for an English voice actor to emulate. The art style changes a lot too, in order to convey the scenes in line visually with the plot. The animation is reasonable - its nothing special, but then it isn't as workmanlike as, say, Generator Gawl. Its also nice to see a series that isn't all about kids, so points for that too ^_- There is a moral message in each story, and they do make a sort of sense, in a wacky Japanese style. The story's are interesting and relatively original, and after a while you do start to care about the characters. Although the comedy elements don't always work with me, the overall package represents a good investment of your time. The extras aren't overly impressive on the DVD - original opening, character sketches and some upcoming shows, but I'm not big on extras anyway, so that's not detracted from the score... 7/10 – Original, interesting and, if you can stand the over the top comedy, fun.
