Kare Kano (otherwise known as "His and Her Circumstances") was something of a surprise. Essentially it's the story of one girl's high school romance, but being a Gainax creation, it was never going to be that simple... I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, what with the legendary Anno directing, and knowing his penchant for turning the ordinary into the downright strange. But although we have a basic high school love story here, there's a certain spark that's almost indefinable. The story of Yukino and Arima is sweet, interesting and manages to avoid the infamous anime love triangle! That's right, it takes the relationship of two people and tells it without falling into the oldest genre trap in the book, and what a breath of fresh air! It's certainly a must for the romantics out there. The style is pure Gainax, and the simple looking screenshots can't convey how crisp everything is on screen, but take it from me, this looks wonderful, although it does contain many simplistic (money saving) animations, much like Evangelion. However, it works well and steady direction save what could have been a small disaster. The whole thing is backed up by a fantastic soundtrack, incorporating strings, piano and simple, melodic tunes. 
With the amazing humour, touching storylines and original approach,
it's one of the best anime I've seen this year, which, along with FLCL,
make a double whammy from Gainax. Amazing. And even better, its now
