| Wow. I can't remember the last time I watched a film like this. It's certainly very emotional, and lives up to the whimsical title with great style. The plot follows Kyosuke as the Summer of '91 begins. A mysterious phonecall awakens him from his sleep, with a warning to be careful of cars. If that's not bizarre (and annoying) enough, the caller claims to be himself! Sure enough, Kyosuke, in a rush to get to class, recklessly runs onto the main road and gets knocked down. At the exact same time, 3 years in the future, his older self is caught in an explosion, and the two unconscious entities clash on the astral plane, sending the young Kyosuke into the future, and the older Kyosuke into realms unknown. All this happens in the first ten minutes, and from here Kyosuke learns what is in store three years in his future. There's a real nostalgic feel to the whole film, and the Director spends time constructing some really touching moments, chief amongst which are the swimming pool scenes showing the characters swimming around each other and the scene where Kyosuke meets Hikaru on the bridge. There's a lot of soft focus, piano music and a ton of still shots, which all add up to an incredibly moving hour and a half, and I found myself wondering about where my friends had gone from all those years ago too. I don't know if MVM have plans to release this yet, but I'll find out. If they do, it deserves to sell well. 10/10 - Not for action junkies, but a wonderful romantic tale. A perfect finish to the series. Back to Menu |
