| Lost Universe is the latest TV series from the Slayers creative team. The series is quite a parallel to the world of Ms Inverse too, with a similarly red-headed, caped hero who saves all and sundry with wit and skill. However, my first comparison when watching the early episodes was with the Dirty Pair series, from which this seems to draw a lot of it's inspiration. We have Kane as a "Trouble Contracter" who is called in to deal with problems above and beyond the normal police mantra. So we have Kane Blueriver, along with his sidekick computer Canal, taking on jobs that get them into scrapes. Along the way they run into Milly, who wants to be the greatest in the Universe at everything. Watching later episodes, we start to see an emerging arc, and its this that makes the series interesting, lifting it above the slapstick, one off adventures of the Dirty Pair. We're introduced to the concept of "Lost Ships", craft from an earlier, more advanced civilisation which are being sought by a mysterious organisation called Nightmare. The ships are animated by computer, and the CGI effects lend a air of sophistication to the series (although I had initially written it off as style over substance).
If I have any problems with Lost Universe, it's the almost forced nature
of the plot - it's incredibly formulaic, and the fact that the Swordbreaker
is a Lost Ship, something that should be shocking (as they're supposed
to be legendary) is revealed in an almost off hand manner as if to get
it out of the way. What is here in terms of comedy, characterisation and plot is actually quite engrossing once you get into it. This is slated for release in the States, and I'm sure it'll do very well - it deserves to too ^_^ 7/10 - Light hearted and fun romp through space, which has more meat to it than you're initially led to believe...
