| Love Hina is one of the most popular shows of the last few years. But is the follow up OVA series, Love Hina Again, much cop? To answer that, if you find the standard anime joke of a man walking into a room and ending up getting smacked by some female, then give it a try. The basic premise of Love Hina was that Keitaro Urashima and his childhood sweetheart make a promise to one day be accepted into the Toudai University just before she moves out of the area and out of his life. Years later, Keitaro, ranked 27th from last in the national exam, ends up becoming the residential manager of an all-girls dormitory after his grandmother leaves. At the start of Love Hina Again, Keitaro has finally been accepted into Toudai. The storyline is hardly going to exercise your brain, the average episode generally features Keitaro walking into a room, slipping up on something and then landing on a female character, obviously in one of three places. The female character then proceeds to smack Keitaro, who then goes flying. To get an almost exact idea of what Love Hina is like, read the last paragraph every 5 minutes for the next 2 hours. It has a great visual style though. The animation is top-notch throughout, the characters are all drawn very well, and the fluid motion makes it great eye candy. Music is good too, if you can stomach the droning, high-pitched tones of J-Pop. ![]() One of the biggest criticisms of Love Hina Again is that the charm from the series has been lost, and Love Hina without it’s charm isn’t much at all. If I was given the choice of Love Hina or Love Hina Again, I would go with Love Hina. But saying this, Lova Hina Again does feature that certain effervescent charm to it that compels you to like it, just it’s not in as much quantity as the series had. The bright and colourful feel does force even the most cold hearted person to smile occasionally. It’s an enjoyable show, good for winding down to after a long hard day, but make sure you don’t put much thought into it. At the end of the day, Love Hina is entertaining, but not something that you should be upset if you never get around to watching. 6/10 – Entertaining, but certainly nothing special Back to Menu |
