| Macross 7, along with Macross Plus, was designed to form part of a cohesive Macross timeline when Studio Nue decided to revive the franchise after the disasterous attempt that was Macross II. Whilst Macross Plus took the mature option to please fans of the original, Macross 7 was to be longer and tried to capture the feel of the original series, with a youthful love triangle and a brighter, more light-hearted atmosphere. Following the crew of the Macross 7 and its charge, City 7, the series follows the daughter of Max and Myria Jenius (2 aces from the original Macross series), a talented singer and guitarist called Mylene. As the series progresses a new threat to humanity is discovered and this time a song may not be enough to save the day for humanity! It’s true that the first three episodes were disappointing, as they were essentially the same formula - the first fifteen minutes were plot, the second fifteen minutes consisted of a battle and Basara going out to sing. The fourth episode broke the trend, and from thereon in it started to take off. However, the series suffers from two big problems. On the one hand the animation is far too repetitive. I'm almost certain that you could compress all 49 episodes into 20 if we're looking at animation unique to each episode. All this does is make the series look incredibly cheap at times, and if you watch them back to back it's almost difficult to figure out whether you've seen the episode before or not. However, it was a weekly show, so I guess the series can get away with it. What it shouldn't get away with, but does (somehow) is the storyline. It's so vacuous! There's hardly anything to it, and for about 5 episodes in a row, Basara is singing to a character that seems to be in a coma. It's almost ironic as I know how she felt! How does it get away with it then? Well, once you get past episode 5, it's almost addictive! I found myself watching 2 hours a night (that's six episodes) and hardly noticing where the time went. Another problem with the series is that, despite its length, very little in terms of personal relationships gets resolved. Despite the love triangle between Mylene, Basara and Gamlin, it really doesn't develop in any meaningful way, which is a crime considering it's supposed to be the hook for the whole series.
Speaking of which, the music is the soul of Macross, and Fire Bomber
contribute very well to the atmosphere, with immensely catchy tunes
(they'd bloody have to be - you hear them every episode without fail!)
8/10 - Hypnotic, addictive and better than it has any right to be considering it's technically so weak... Back to Menu |
