M A C R O S S  7  D Y N A M I T E  O A V

Firstly, the intro has to be seen to be believed – it manages to top the effects used in Macross Plus, with breathtaking CGI mixing seamlessly with traditional cel animation to
produce a wonderfully fluid and exciting intro to the OAV.

The animation is excellent throughout in fact, with vibrant backgrounds and detailed character designs which put the original TV series to shame – there’s none of the repeat animation here which dogged it previously either.

Unfortunately the massive lift you get from seeing it doesn't blind you to the immense flaws in the series. The problem with Dynamite is what it’s missing. The whole story, if that's what you can call it, is set around Basara, who selfishly wanders off, as per usual, and has an adventure with some(nicely designed) whales. Well big whoop...

The Fire Valkerie is nowhere to be seen, despite the amazing intro sequence, Max and Miria don't get a look in, and the other members of Fire Bomber are left floundering for screen time. The creators seem so desperate for ways to get the other characters involved that they’ve created a scene where Mylene is drugged and almost taken by a raving lesbian. Problem is, that makes the storyline seem more interesting than it actually is. And how many people who went to a concert in this country wouldn't riot if the two main band members were replaced by cardboard cut-outs and a cheap stereo?

Overall the storyline is slight at best, with few situations of any consequence. Other than the wonderful eye candy and reasonable music, there's nothing here.

4/10 - Write a story to go with the next one, damn you!
