R A N M A  1 / 2  T V  B O X  S E T

Ranma 1/2 needs little explanation. It follows the everyday 'antics' of Ranma Saotome, a martial artist with a curse transforming him into a girl when splashed with cold water, and then back to male if doused in hot water. His Dad (who suffers a similar curse but turns into a Panda) has engaged Ranma to his best friend's short tempered tomboy daughter, Akane Tendo. Together they make a less than 'perfect' couple - Chaos ensues...

Season 1 of the Ranma 1/2 series fails to disappoint hard core fans, although it is somewhat crude compared to the outstanding OAV series. It offers an introduction of most of the main characters, although a few (Ukyo for example) seem to be missing. The episodes are also set in a different order to those in the manga, which can lead to some confusion, but not to the extent of damaging the plot.

The animation isn't awful, just a little dull and lifeless in places, but still just retaining the original Ranma style. The music can get a little repetitive, but it is effective when it needs to be. The humour is still there, it just isn't as 'obvious' as in the OAV series.

Does anyone see a pattern here? Buy the OAV's. If you're new to Ranma 1/2, buy the manga, if you've done that, then buy the OAV's. I've done that, and bought the TV series. It wasn't worth it. The TV series isn't terrible, and it isn't a waste, provided you have the money, and that you're a big enough fan to endure the same stories you've already read - be sure you're going to like what you pay for...

7/10 - I love Ranma 1/2, but I can't speak for everyone unless I consider every quality a good anime should have and if it has it.

More kids turning into animals? Another cursed family? Must be Fruits Basket from Funimation...
