S.CRY.ed

S.CRY.ed is a series that was released last year in Japan which no one noticed or cared to notice for that matter. Its had so much praise in Japan I don’t know why it took so long for fansubbers to notice it... On a lighter note the Anime and Manga coincided with each other, the Manga is still continuing today and God do I want to read them :)

It was created by the talented company Sunrise, which are respected for such series as Gundam, Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop. All those series were written by the genius Hajime Yadate, and he's also behind Scryed so you know that you’re in for one hell of an action packed, emotional rollercoaster ride with angst and anger riveting on the tracks.

Scryed is set in the not so distant future. About 22 years ago, a mysterious and powerful energy manifested and destroyed every living creature in the Kanagawa Prefecture. Several years’ later people were living there again but Kanagawa suffered a major change - it looked uninhabitable due to the massive jaggy cliffs that were created. It was also separated from Japan and thus it became to be known as the "Lost Grounds".

Certain individuals who were born in the lost grounds later on in the years gained a mysterious power called the alter ability, a power which allows the mind to absorb metals around them and create either a robot or something on their body. It’s hard to describe the alter-ability in greater detail mainly because every alter-user has a different look and use for that power.

That’s the background down to a tee; now let’s get on with the main story. It’s about a guy named Kazuma who has the alter-ability, which manifests on his right arm. He works for a guy named Kimishima which is Kazuma’s best friend, and they're basically hired guns. Kazuma is the guy who usually does all the work with his Alter-ability "The Shell Bullet". The fiery attitude that comes with it isn’t apart of his ability :P.

Forces by the names of Hold and Holy come from the main city using their outer alter users (inside the city) to take inner alter users (outside the city) and to then take them to the city either to lock them up and do manual labour or to join Holy and use their powers. Kazuma (the inner) crosses paths with Ryuhou (the outer) and their encounter is as much about a battle of beliefs as it is with each other. Kazuma wants to protect those he loves and the Ryuhou just wants a greater sense of peace and prosperity...

Kazuma is terrific; he shows guts and will not quit until he’s won. What strikes me the most about him though is his attitude, its like a fire that is fuelled by his hatred in his soul which totally gets his character across, he gives it his all and lets his enemies know about it either by his voice or by his face. His voice actor did an amazing job on acting out Kazuma. Ryuhou is a character who is fuelled by seeking the revenge of his murdered mother - at first he’s a very cold character and doesn’t care for the attention of others, but later on we get to see his character change due to the encounters he has with Kazuma.

The soundtrack is good - not amazing but good, especially the upbeat music on the opening and the ending, which reveals more of the song as the series progresses (nice idea) - the opening animation on the opening changes too.

As of late I have been going off anime, which is mainly due to the fact there has been nothing but rubbish these days which doesn’t require any feelings or a mind (Chobits, Happy Teacher) but Scryed totally put my faith back into anime. Its a series that deserves to be at the top with all the greats, and I haven’t seen a series that’s engrossed me like this since Cowboy Bebop.

All I really want to do now is to shake the hand of Hajime Yadate, the guy is an absolute genius and everyone should respect him for what he’s done for this industry.

10/10 - Thank You, Yadate-sama for putting my faith back into anime.
