| Slamdunk started as a manga by Takehiku Inou, which first appeared in the early 90s. Slamdunk is one of the most popular mangas in Japan, so they created an anime which started in '93 and finished in '96. There were (roughly) 100+ episodes, 3 OAV's and a movie. The main character in Slamdunk is Sakuragi Hanamichi, a very short tempered guy (like me ^_~) who hasn't had the best of luck with women - in fact he's been dumped by at least 50 girls before entering High-school! As the viewer first meets him, Hanamichi is understandably depressed, until a girl by the name of Akagi Haruko starts talking to him.Hanamichi totally falls for this girl when thier eyes meet, so he totally forgets about what happened to him previously. Haruko wants Hanamichi to join the basketball team (obviously because Hanamichi is extremly tall) and of course, being smitten, he accepts and tries everything to join but sadly he's pretty useless on the court. The anime and the manga follow his trials and tribulations as he improves his skills, finds out that Haruko is interested in someone else who he forms an intense rivalry with (Rukawa Kaede). I love this series - I'm a big fan of the manga and this anime stays faithful to it. The animation might be dated now but its extremely funny and gripping, especially in the basketball matches. The only problem I have with it is that occasionly the matches are a little too long, and as such it can get a bit tedious (like the fights in Dragonball Z). I would definitely recommend this anime to anyone who loves Initial D - like Initial D it hooks you in from episode 1 and makes you want to watch more. You don't have to like basketball to enjoy it, (I'm not a big fan of basketball myself and I love it). 10/10 - I'm giving this a perfect 10, if I could I'd give it an 11. Back to Menu |
