| At last, an anime slapstick comedy that really can be hilarious. This is the story of Lina Inverse, a red headed, flat-chested sorceress who roams the land stealing the treasure acquired by bandits (much to her delight and their annoyance). After kicking seven shades out of one particular group of bandits, she finds herself in the possession of a very powerful object, one that is capable of resurrecting the demon God Shabranigdo - if only she knew which one it was! A chance meeting with Gourry, a thick but lovable swordsman, supplies her with a companion and foil for her razor sharp wit. Once Zelgadis, a cursed Shamen, arrives on the scene, the series starts to take off with plenty of spellcasting and rivalry between the threesome. From there, we meet more characters, find the baddie and kick his butt ^_^ The series is basically a fantasy comedy that never really takes itself at all seriously, even in the hairiest moments. Asides to the camera, quick quips and questioning of the script by the characters in the show leaves us in no doubt that this is a comedy all round. The whole series is very much aware of itself, and plays with the viewers as much as it can - in recent years the only thing I've seen to outdo Slayers in terms of all out quipping is Excel Saga.
I have to admit, this hits a kind of lull around the middle, but it
finds a second wind and is, for the most part, entertaining and immensely
enjoyable, even if it is a bit of a lightweight. Then again, it never
claimed to be anything else :)9/10 Fantastic stuff, and well worth picking up if you can find it. Back to Menu |
