I'm a big fan of the Silent Mobius manga - the whole idea behind it, the characters, the plotlines... All of which made me very keen to see the TV adaptation. Lucky for me it was on sale at Minami then eh?

The first thing that struck me about the series was the opening music - it screams Evangelion at you, right down to the arrangement of the intro through to the chorus. It's almost uncanny enough to be spooky, even if the subject matter of Christian symbolism and occult/religious overtones are present in both series.

The subtitling is nice and clear, with the pace being set just about right. The quality of the tape wasn't so hot though - it squeaked terribly the whole way through, which is incredibly off putting. Hopefully my copy doesn't reflect the majority of the output...

Beyond that, the series is incredibly crisp - the character, mecha and creature designs are all representative of Kia Asimiya's clean and detailed style. This is aided by the nicely subtle use of CGI that seamlessly blends into the animation.

As for the story, the timeline seems to have been re-jigged, with some characters being introduced earlier than in the manga (although the author had stated that there were some characters he had wanted to introduce earlier than he did in the manga itself), and the movies have been written off completely. This is a bit of a shame, as I'd always considered the movies to be canon, but now it's hard to figure out what's official. Regardless, this is a quality production, and well worth taking a look at, especially as it's now available on DVD.

9/10 - First impressions are very favourable - go try it!

 The future of law enforcement...
Megalopolis crime hits new heights in Manga Entertainment's Cyber City Oedo 808. Despite the gruffness and the swearing it manages to be both stylish and immensley entertaining.
