| "Hentai". Still with me? If you are, then read on, because as you will find out, this fine OAV series from the art director of Tenchi isn't just your usual romp of sex scenes all the way through, but something actually worth going out of your way for, so lets take a look at the sillyness that is Spaceship Agga Ruter, shall we? Despite the fact that the Agga ruter OAV constantly goes of the plot it has with its excuses to get into a scene that involves sex, or something silly like that, the series actually has a bit of a story to it. A guy called Taiyo travels the galaxy (it says on the back of the DVD its his partner, but it isn't) with his foster mother, Kei, as Taiyo just turned 19, Kei begins to ermm.... "educate" him on how to make a woman feel good by methods which cannot be printed ^_^; Anyway, the two run into adventures along the way, and soon their crew expands when a female space pirate captures their ship, and Taiyo's skills and kei's teaching sort of end up in the space pirate, kei and Taiyo traveling with each other, running into more adventures which tests Taiyo's, as kei puts it, "teaching", it really has to be watched to make more sense(wait, it doesnt make much sense even after watching it, but anyway). At first glance, it would seem Agga ruter was your typical cheesey hentai with little plot with the usual sillyness and sex scenes aplenty all the way through, and it is, well, technically, anyway. The main thing which makes Spaceship agga ruter so unusually, yet pleasantly amusing is the fact that because it is cheesey, it deliberately takes the piss out of itself in such a unique way, its almost ironic, a style of humour that is so well put together, the end result being highly amusing :) And this is pretty much spread out throughout the entire series, so its hardly dull. The artwork is lovely; shines with quality, and is finely represented all the way through. As the series is done by the art director of the Tenchi series, the artwork is also quite similar, and, as you should already know if youve watched Tenchi, this can only be a good thing. Agga Ruter doesnt come without its flaws however, despite the brilliantly done humour, the sex scenes can drag on a little long at times, and can get a touch boring. Fortunately, this isn't too common throughout the series, and certainly nothing you cant live with. The feature's:- Not only does this disc boast four OAV's, but its also jammed packed with extra features, the question is, are they any good? Usually, we answer these seemingly rhetorical sounding questions by taking a look at what's being asked, so lets see what's on the side of the main course; Lets look at the sub and dub first, now, Spaceship Agga Ruter comes on a billingual disc, so yeah, you can watch it subtitled in English with the original Japanese dialogue, or, if you so desire, you could watch the English dub. However, the latter option, and by that I mean the dub, should be avoided, simply because it is criminally awful, and therefore isn't worth bothering with. Why? well, its because the voice casting here is done with little or no effort. Yes, it is cheesy like the series itself, but the two just do not mix, so this can detract from the humour and the Japanese-style jokes, so best just viewed subbed then. The features aren't much cop either, yes, there are a lot of them, and on the back of the DVD makes themselves out to be a tasty little helping of DVD extra's, but the reality is this, they are really only just segments of the OAV wrapped up with some fancy writing explaining on who the characters are, or storyboards and sketches, the latter isn't too bad, but the sotry boards are so small, that they are barely viewable as they scroll down along the side of the scene you are viewing. Then there's the image gallery which are just freezes from the series, takes a look at mostly the hentai scenes, and lets you pause at the scene of your choice with your fancy DVD remote control (which I can assume, can only serve as one purpose to the viewer ^_-). Really then, these are all just plain boring after you've seen the anime, and are best avoided unless you've nothing to do for about 10 minutes. To
conclude, as humorous and entertaining as Spaceship Agga Ruter actually
is, its still hentai, so if you really don't like this sort of thing,
Agga Ruter is probably best avoided. For those of you that can tolerate
it though, stick with the series, as it is highly humorous in places,
definitely recommended to those looking for something different in an
OAV, and in my overall opinion, well worth the purchase.8/10 - Hilarious hentai OAV series by the animation director of Tenchi, very pleasant surprise indeed Back To MenuNote by the Ed: I tried to find a few screenshots, but the were all so dodgy I couldn't use them... ^_^; Back to Menu |
