Trigun: The tale of a lone gunslinger who's so dangerous his reputation alone is enough to make entire towns evacuate on hearing he's about to visit. But surely the blonde geek in the red trenchcoat can't be Vash the Stampede?!

Well that sums up the plot quite nicely really - he's worth $$60,000,000,000 and he helps those in trouble, although  many wouldn't thank him. Despite destroying numerous towns, he's never taken one human life (which means he's either very good or very bad, depending on how you look at it...) Insurance investigators Meryl and Milly are on his trail to try and prevent their company's biggest cause for insurance claims putting them out of business, and all this provides the background for a series of one shot adventures with the obligatory background arc there to provide the character development.

If all this makes Trigun sound formulaic, then that's because it is. It doesn't try anything new in terms of the comedy/drama formula that's been so popular with anime like Slayers and Lost Universe, except to say that it mixes in the cool air of Cowboy Bebop to add a welcome edge.

Thankfully, although its been done before, Trigun manages to take the material and add enough of its own spin to make it interesting. Whereas Lost Universe has its bland moments, Trigun is constantly entertaining, even in its early episodes. The character is likeable, and although similarities to Macross 7's Nekki Basara are evident, the annoying personality and gratuitous musical numbers are not.

To be honest, although this series won't get a 10/10, it does stand as one of my favourite anime, simply becuase it all feels so genuine - Vash is easily one of the most rounded anime characters ever created, and anyone who doesn't sympathise with him has no heart...

If you like Western slapstick with a touch of Bebop cool, Trigun will serve you well, and all in the name of Love and Peace ^_^

8/10 - Seen it all before of course, but its good enough to get away with it.

 Space Cowboys...
For a slightly grittier but no less funky set of space cowboys, take a look at Cowboy Bebop.
