| Vandread Second Stage easily lives up to the standards set by Vandread – and surpasses most of them along it's 13 episode course. If you liked Vandread, don’t even bother reading the review, you’ll automatically like The Second Stage. It picks up right where Vandread left off. The crew of the Nirvana are fighting a load of nasty spaceships from Earth, which have the rather evil intent of harvesting their body parts. As the series progresses, we’re subjected to a whole load of cracking episodes. One episode focuses mainly on Bart and a girl he befriends on a desolate planet, it’s a very touching 25 minutes, and it kept me engrossed throughout. The Second Stage plays more on character development, and it's all the better for it.
The characters aren’t all perfect though, which is plain to see with
the inclusion of a new character, Misty, onboard the Nirvana. Apart
from not belonging there in the first place, she creates a ‘Techi-esque’
scenario along with Hibiki and Dita, which feels extremely tired and
worn out. CGI was one of Vandread’s most impressive selling points, and The Second Stage dishes up more of the same top quality CGI that was so impressive the first time round. You can’t help but find the action scenes attractive. There are a few more flaws in the series – most of them circulate around the series ending. After you get 12 whole episodes building up to this ending – the Vandread finale, it feels flat and empty when it arrives. But this doesn’t stop Vandread – The Second Stage from being one of the most entertaining and visually beautiful shows I’ve seen this year, it’s definitely one you’ll want to check out. 9/10 - More of the same. But some very good same . Back to Menu |
