X  T V  S E R I E S

X is, arguably, CLAMP at it's finest. It started out as a 20+ volume manga series that's rich in story, style and atmosphere. It then spanned on to create a movie, which was written before the manga had finished, which while being a great film, lacked a lot of plot and background information. CLAMP have now produced X TV, a 24 episode series, and they're hopefully going to avoid the very few problems that the film had.

For those of you that have already watched the movie, the X series is still worth taking a peek at. Many people were left confused by the movie, as jamming 20 volumes of manga into a 2 hour movie isn't an easy task at all. The series explains all this information more clearly and makes the X experience easier. Clamp have said the series ending is going to be different. Fans of the movie will no doubt be fans of this as well.

But for those of you that haven't watched the movie, in the year 1999, an apocalyptic battle between the dragons of heaven and the dragons of earth will result in the fate of humanity being decided. The dragons of earth fight to remove humanity's problems through fire, while the dragons of heaven fight to to preserve life as it is now. Kamui, a being of untold power, is the key to the success for either side.

Fans of the movie will no doubt notice the series picks up on a slower start to the series, it instantly shows itself to be more like the manga, taking time to get it's roots set and many episodes are set aside for character interaction and development. Those of you that were expecting constant action from the offset are going to be shocked by the almost desolate feel of Tokyo.

The Animation is typical CLAMP work, long legs, wide eyes, handsome guys and pretty girls. As much as I've despised this style for an awful long time, X shows me that it can look good. It's beautifully done, and the sound is on par with the visuals. The background music is always spot on with what's going on. It's all very impressive.

Most people that know me would agree that I'm not the best person to give judgment on CLAMP's work, since I've had issues with almost everything they've ever produced. However, I find it hard to find faults in X. It's their most mature work I've seen yet, and it's certainly the best from my point of view. Certainly one of the finest dark action series I've seen to date.

9/10 - Dark. Moody. Brilliant.
