| Yami no Matsuei: Descendants of Darkness (don't those both mean the same thing?) Is a shoujo anime that doesn't seem to have very many girls in. Not that having girls in a shoujo anime is important, you would just expect it right? Anyway. Without confusing anyone with Japanese terms, here is the plot: When people die, some of them have something 'unresolved' in their lives which means they can't move onto being properly dead (like in the first Casper movie). So, these people get the job of watching over the deaths in the living world, and making sure no one dies before they are supposed to. These people are called the 'Shinigami' which translates as 'Gods of Death', and they work in a Hades/Underworld-like place which looks like an office building. Do you follow me? It also just so happens that a lot of these Shinigami, are men who died in their twenties and will retain their youthful good looks for ever. How bizarre.. The lead character is the sweet favouring Shinigami Tzuki, who is far too sweet and innocent to be a Shinigami, which leads to his failure with many of his co-workers, but manages to win the concern of the cold-but-attractive Hisoka, a sixteen year old Shinigami with an unsurprisingly angsty past. The main perverted bad guy is the anaemic (that's an assumption) Muraki, who finds it very easy to make everything he says sound dirty. There are lots of other attractive males as well, but I don't have space to witter on about how hot they look when they push their ill-fitting glasses up (even that sounded dirty). Aside
from the pretty boys, the plot is not the best, a lot of the interesting
back-story from the manga has been cut out, leaving you guessing about
why the characters are how they are. The animation is pretty, everyone
has impossibly bright, glowing eyes, but sometimes there are a few too
many money saving animation, hands put over mouths, characters too far
away to see the lips move, you get the idea. The opening theme 'Eden', is pretty spooky (well I thought so), and the intro sequence gives a good impression of the anime as a whole (pretty boys in long coats). And in case it isn't obvious, this is shounen-ai, and there are lots of sexual 'implications', as well as horrible murders, demon angels, and blood all over the place (^_^;;). Proper review score 7/10 - Pretty visually, but the pieces missing from the manga let it down. Crazed fangirl score 11/10 - BISH-ON-EN Back to Menu |
