I think my problems with my current car insurer are at and end now. Because I'm getting rid of my car in the near future I didn't want to take out a year's policy and incur a charge for cancelling it; some insurers offer a month-by-month system that works out more than the usual 12 month contract, but for a short while it does work out less. Anyway.

I took out one such policy and when proof that I have three years' worth of no-claims was requested, I sent the only document available...in this case, it was a photocopy of last year's insurance certificate. So far so good.

That was until I got another letter that said there was a 'discrepancy' in that I only had two years of no claims (this was either a stupid mistake or a lie. No document of mine even mentions two years). I got a £35 charge and a £10 increase in next month's premium for my trouble.

Fortunately, the official No Claims Proof document from last year's insurer arrived so I was then able to prove I was right in the first place. Since I didn't hear a thing after posting a photocopy of that, I sent an e-mail to their complaints desk outlining how I was right, they were wrong, and I was so disappointed in their customer service I threatened to go to the Financial Services Ombudsman to get a refund of the unfair charges.

Today I got an e-mail that said they had acquired a 'verbal confirmation' from my previous insurer...the paper document that proved the same thing was not received. How 'convenient'. ¬_¬ Still, I don't mind as much if they're still falsely accusing me of lying, as long as I get my refund.

Basically, unless you either a. threaten them with legal action or b. use recorded mail for sending documents to them, they choose to ignore every sort of correspondance. These people are either implausibly incompentent or deliberately trying to rip customers off.

Lessons learned here that saved my skin:

1. Shop around. What seems value-for-money may be hiding a lousy customer service. By and large insurance IS a scam, but sadly car insurance is a legal requirement. This particular insurer has a virtually unbroken record of dissatisfied customers on the price comparison site message boards, but I didn't realise until it was too late.

2. Keep documents and logs of correspondance safe. Old certificates, receipts, proof of postage...put it in a file or stack it in an orderly pile on your desk if you want. There's no telling when you'll need them!

3. Know your rights. People who claim to be professionals could well be utterly clueless and sloppy, and this is indistinguishable from knowingly overcharging people in my opinion. The FSO are on your side, and their name carries weight when you make a complaint.

4. When you DO complain, keep it clear and polite. Not only does it give you a sense of smug satisfaction that you have the moral and intellectual high ground, it also makes you look like less of a rude moron in the eyes of whoever you're complaining.

More on the last point: if my recent experience is anything to go by, some unscrupulous companies thrive on the perceived ignorance of their customers. If you can show that you've rumbled them, it could well be enough.

So, yeah. Car insurance is an absolute minefield, but even the most clueless and wimpiest of us can get the fair treatment we deserve!

I'll be keeping the same avatar for a while (the Vocaloid Megurine Luka, for those curious) but since I've met so many of the regulars here at meets, cons and other social events, hiding behind a username I picked on a whim ages ago seems a bit pointless now. :)
