Default General Music Discussion

Right, I want to know the sort of crap you guys like. My intentions for this thread are for people to post new bands or songs they found out about, or recent purchases, any concerts they go to etc. I miss my metal talk, so hopefully we can get some decent musical discussions going on, regardless of genre.

I ordered 'Born of the Flickering' - Old Man's Child and 'Filosofem' - Burzum at the weekend. Both are black metal releases from the Early-Mid 90s, the latter being one of my favorate releases by one of my favorate bands.

I also agreed to go see Good Charlotte with my mate when they next come touring. I like them, but I have my doubts as to what the concert will be like.

Also, before I cock up, whats the forums rules on music links? Like Last.fm or even Youtube videos of songs, are they allowed? Dont wanna get in trebble

My tastes are quite random, Im not going to do the old thing and step back, give a smile and say, 'Well im a fan of all music' though that said, my collection is rather irratic

Of the things i listen to often i would say the collection goes as a mix of Rock, little Prog. Rock, then over into what Wiki informs me is Ambient, Psybient, Psytrance and Electronica.

So in those areas it goes from a HUGE smashing pumpkins collection, relatively complete except for rareties collection of Porcupine tree, Pink Floyd... that kind of stuff. Then over on the electronica side, into OTT, Shpongle (new album out BTW, its awesome), Hallucinogen, Kuba etc....

There is a filling of random stuff around that, so many of the standard bands around when i was growing up and getting into music in the 90s. I dont generally get much time to just go off an listen to new music/bands. Mainly because most of the easily available stuff is just bad and uninspired in my opinion. Still I always keep my ears open for something that makes me nod and go mmmmm, cool

Im not really a fan of the Electronica/Ambient kind of stuff. I like the odd track, but not enough to call me a fan of anything by any means.

And I just bought another CD, This. I doubt many people like that sort of music, but I think its really nice (if you can say that about someone screeching about depression), and I can get a feel of the emotion in it.
Sadly the band split up, and thats their only release.
It was £12 pretty much.

When I say I can listen to pretty much anything there are a few types that I really can't stand but generally I give most things a chance. I appreciate classical, blues and jazz but I can listen to heavier stuff too...I used to say I disliked dance music because I found it boring but I just hadn't discovered artists that appealed to me at the time.

What I've really come to appreciate in recent months is instrumental music; possibly because I suck at discerning lyrics so generally don't pay attention to them, or possibly because it's good to have in the background when I'm busy doing something else. Soundtracks are good for this but I like the post-rock/shoegaze too (I really hate using genre labels but sometimes it's just easier). Explosions in the Sky, Mono and Mogwai are my favourites at the moment. Going to see God Is An Astronaut live soon too.

for me I do have have an all round taste, for instance, I do like japanese pop/rock etc, and with living in Mexico, I did pick up a taste of spanish pop, and also stuff like mariachi, cumbia and also some salsa.

But for english music, I do sway towards electromic/new wave stule of music. I was brough up with a wide range of music, of course the main groups for me are the smiths/morrissey, Depeche Mode, New Order and James. then again I like cheesey music as well.

If I was to name all the groups etc I do like. We would be here for sometime, but I have always prefered music to general TV.

I have a wide taste in music, but tend towards the more experimental end of the spectrum. I have a large CD collection of electronic music of various types: techno, ambient, electronica, electro, DnB, left-field hip hop, etc. I like dubstep, but haven't bought much of that. Been going to a lot of noise gigs over the last year or two. Recently been listening to quite a lot of Krautrock. I still like a lot of the alt-rock/indie/shoegaze that I listened to in my younger days.

Like others I listen to most things, but recently my listening tastes have been good hip-hop like Sage Francis : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiV2stUu5RE, or weird electronica/dance oddness like the Knife: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=617ANIA5Rqs

My taste in music would depend upon my mood and place. If i'm out clubbing I want some house or some techno/electro eg Daft Punk, Steve Angello, Boys Noize, Royksopp.
If I'm chilling with friends like in house or pub/bar, stuff like The Streets, Audio Bullys, Death in Vegas, Tom Vek, hell even some good ol' Michael Jackson.
Rubbish day at work and I'm driving home I'll stick on some Sigur Ros or Godspeed You Black Emperor, maybe something quite and acoustic just to relax. All in all what I like in music depends on how I feel at the time.

Well, in your opinion :P

And good news! Two of my CDs came, the Hanging Garden CD and Filosofem. Filosofem is a Digipak, which I wasnt aware of. I would have liked a jewel case, but oh well.
Now to continue waiting for Old Mans Child and My Immortal Hoodie.

Also, Jesu Død off Filosofem. The intro never fails to amaze me in its awesomeness. It just sounds evil.

Angels & Airwaves have released a new album, and put it up for download free of charge.
Im not big into that sort of music, the 'alternate rock' stuff, but it has Tom DeLonge from blink-182 in it.
Its avaliable to download here.
Thought somebody may be interested in it.

its a repost but, for the 90s alt-rock people who might have missed before (given that there be links going up)

HD of a live performance of Starla by the Pumpkins in 2007. Possibly one of the best versions of the song.
