Default Japanese anime and live-action films on the big screen

I thought it was about time we had a Cinema related thread to match the TV thread here: http://www.uk-anime.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13498

So here goes.....

My local independent is having an event on Japanese cinema since the mid 90's details here: http://issuu.com/broadwaycinemanottingham/docs/march/9

"The programme focuses on the resurgence of Japanese cinema from the mid 1990s onwards. Including established names such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa as well as up-and-coming talent Yuya Ishii, the featured directors have carved a new path for the future and contributed to the recent success of Japanese cinema around the world."

and here's the schedule:

FRI 11th March, 8.30PM CURE (1

SAT 12th March, 8.30PM GO (15)

SUN 13th March, 8.30PM JOSEE, THE TIGER AND THE FISH (1

MON 14th March, 8.30PM LINDA LINDA LINDA (12A)

TUE 15th March, 8.30PM ONE MILLION YEN GIRL (15)

WED 16th March, 8.30PM SAWAKO DECIDES (12A)

Tickets can be booked online via their site: http://www.broadway.org.uk/

I post details of any Japanese film screenings in Manchester that I know of (and the wider North-West of England, if I hear about them) on the NanimeW website, so probably won't repeat them here...anyone wanting to be kept informed should subscribe to the NanimeW RSS feed or announcements mailing list.

Having said that, my local arthouse cinema is screening Confessions, the latest film by Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze Girls, Memories of Matsuko), at the moment. I went to see it yesterday and can say that it's a bit a of departure from his previous films...it's a very black revenge thriller with none of the quirkiness that lightened the darkness of MoM. I enjoyed it and would certainly recommend it to people who like psychological horror, although I still prefer his previous films (I've yet to see Paco and the Magical Book).

Third Window Films are showing it at various cinemas around the country at the moment and will be releasing it on DVD in April.

BTW, the film season megalomaniac has posted about is playing a few other UK cities (not Manchester, sadly)...details here.

Another one: http://www.broadway.org.uk/events/film_norwegian_wood, this one gets a full run rather than just one off screenings though.

This (Norwegian Wood) is getting a limited UK release. Details of where it's playing, and from which date, are available on the distributor's Facebook site for the film.

I saw a trailer for it before Confessions and it didn't appeal to me.

13 Assassins is also screening round here from this weekend...I'll be posting details on NanimeW as soon as I've confirmed them all.

Edit: Info about screenings in the North-West of England here. Info about screenings across the whole of the UK here.

13 Assassins was excellent, heartily recommend it. Didn't manage to see Confessions, went home to bed instead, lol.

I wish I owned a little cinema somewhere.

I'd advertise all the cult films and give loads of people the chance to watch all their favourite movies on the big screen.

I mean, who wouldn't want to see the original Transformers, ALIENS, Terminator 2 or even Pulp Fiction on the big screen at their leisure?

Cinemas, both large multiplexes and small independent ones, will often have screens for hire for corporate events, private parties, film festivals, etc.

Note, however, that in addition to the venue hire costs, it can be quite costly to hire film prints to screen, as you have to pay insurance and courier costs in addition to the rental costs (even more expensive if there isn't a print available in the country). It may be possible to screen off digital media (DVD/BD) if the cinema has the facilities, although there's still a not-inconsiderable hire cost involved (you can't legally just show your own disks).

Having said that, with the right kind of conditions (e.g. a small indy cinema in a student area), it's certainly possible to do. There's a small, single-screen cinema down the road from where I live (in a suburb of Manchester) and I've considered on a number of occasions of putting on a cult film night there, however, the relatively poor turn-out I get for my free-to-attend city-centre-based Japanese film night has put me off a bit.
