Default Lexmark x73 decides not to scan one day

Hey all,

My girlfriend has a Lexmark x73 all-in-one printer. Every now and then her computer says "Scanner cannot be enabled" So she has to remove the USB cable and re-inserts in order for it to respond. However, a few days ago she did this and it said "Windows does not recognize this device". To this point the computer recognizes the Lexmark printer and prints, but it does not scan.

We've tried reinstalling the drivers, uninstalling and installing with an XP fix and a whole manner of different ways. Rebooted and shut down.

The only thing we havn't tried is reformating. I've been reading up on the model and apparently it's problem prone. We don't think it's USB related or a hardware fault, since it's sudden.

She has a Windows XP Home Edition and has used this printer the past two years on two sperate computers (The lesser being a Windows 9

Any advice?

Thank you.

It also seems to be a bit of the "cheap home-user" side of hardware.

Frankly, it looks like hardware built on a budget for the home user.

I think you already know what the answer i am going to give is

"you get what you pay for" =]

Two years isn't a bad whack to get out of a budget all-in-one tbh! It sounds to me like its come to the end of its lifespan, you could go ahead and pick up a new all-in-one on the cheap or perhaps pick up a replacement scanner?

I prefer seperate devices, personally. Mainly because its cheaper to buy a new printer than buy replacement ink

Beofre you throw it away, plug it into another computer!! I don't think you've determined weather ts the printer or windows. I've always had problems in the past with mobile phone drivers, which work fine at first but gradually break after a few months. New win XP, it works again! It might be a case requiring re-installation of xp, which should do every few year anyway, not that many people do.
