Anime Expo 2015 manga and novel licensing round-up

Written by A. H. on 06 Jul 2015

Needless to say, Anime Expo 2015 in Los Angeles, contained a prescence from some of the big publishers in the industry, which meant that there was some major news in the realm of manga and, indeed, novels. Indeed, even Tokyopop were on hand to rise like a phoenix from the flames (again).

UPDATE 06/07/2015: Added details of Yen Press and Crunchyroll's announcements.

Viz Media

Surprise announcement of the show came courtesy of Viz Media, and more specifically their Haikasoru imprint, with news that they will be releasing the first three novels Yoshiki Tanaka's epic sci-fi novel series Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The first three volumes are currently scheduled for release starting in spring 2016, with more to follow dependant upon the success of those initial volumes.

In actual manga news, the company also confirmed that Dragon Ball will continue its full colour edition releases to take in the Freeza saga from next spring. Meanwhile, Naruto spin-off Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring will see a print release starting in winter 2016.

A panel for the publisher's Shoujo Beat imprint confirmed that Shuriken and Pleats, from the author of Vampire Knight, has been acquired for release from winter 2016, college-set Behind the Scenes has been picked up for release from spring 2016.

Vertical Comics

Vertical had plenty to announce during their panel at the show: Aside from non-fiction work Sushi Chef Sukiyabashi Jiro, the company announced another Attack on Titan spin-off in the form of its Lost Girls novel, sporting three short stories revolving around Mikasa and Annie. THe novel will be release in summer 2016.

In manga news, Keiichi Arawi's surreal comedy manga Nichijou will be coming to the west from next spring, while FukuFuku: Kitten Tales, from the author of Chi's Sweet Home, will be bringing the promise of adorable cats from spring 2016 to boot.

Seven Seas Entertainment

This publisher wasn't actually at Anime Expo, but that didn't stop them crashing the party via the wonders of the Internet, where they announced their acqusition of Angel Beats! Heaven's Door, a prequel manga to the Jun Maeda-penned original TV series which takes in the formation of the SSS, aka the Afterlife Battlefront. The first volume of the series is currently scheduled for release in February 2016.

Digital Manga Inc.

Aside from a restructuring of the way they pay those involved in translating their works, DMP had an updated release schedule to announce. Thus, we can expect to see A Waltz in the Clinic begin in September of this year, Even So, I Will Love You Tenderly arrives in October, The Tyrant Falls in Love is set for a November release for its ninth volume, and I've Seen It All, As Many As There Are Stars and ZE are all set for volumes to be released in 2016.

Kodansha Comics

Kodansha Comics USA had some big announcements of their own, and leading the pack was Princess Jellyfish, which will be released in large-format 2-in-1 editions from February 2016, with the first twelve volumes (or six 2-in-1 editions) licensed at this time.

Also picked up the company are thriller series Real Account, to be released in English from March 2016, and Magatsuki from February 2016, the latter of which is currently available digitally on Crunchyroll manga.

In other news, the success of Noragami: Stray God means that it will be switching to monthly releases from October, while Fairy Tail will be re-released in five-volume omnibus editions starting in September.

Yen Press

Yen Press certainly had no shortage of new acquisitions and ideas to espouse. Starting out with light novels via their YenOn imprint, Ryogho Narita's Baccano joins the forthcoming Durarara in the company's line-up, while Another spin-off Episode S gets picked up, as does My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected (whose anime adaptation is known as My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) in both its light novel and manga forms.

New manga added to the company's slate of physical print releases includes further story arcs of Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, while all-new announcements include How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend, Barakamon spin-off Handa-kunDemonizer Zilch and Taboo-Tattoo.

The company will also be embarking upon a number of future digital-only releases, including super-powered mahjong series Saki; fan-service laden Sekirei; action-horror series The Corpse Princess; source material for summer season anime Aoharu x MachinegunAphorism; Black DetectiveCrimson Prince and Rennaisance Eve.

Perhaps most notably of all, Yen Press will begin "simulpub" releases of a number of titles starting from October, including Black ButlerHanda-kunThe Royal TutorMy Monster Girl's Too Cool For YouDemon King Ena-Sama Goes To Manga SchoolToday's Kerberos and Kake Gurui. There are no further details on the company's exact strategy for this at present.

Crunchyroll Manga
