Crunchyroll adds 1080p streaming for some anime

Iff you're a stickler for watching things in High Definition, then doubtless you'll appreciate the efforts of most modern anime streaming sites to offer up the latest shows in 720p.  But how about full-on, bandwidth melting 1080p?

Along these lines, streaming site Crunchyroll have now announced that they will be streaming a number of series with a 1080p option for paid subscribers, with shows such as Naruto Shippuden, Bleach and Nisemonogatari as well as over twenty other series receiving this additional streaming option.

Of course, one caveat to note here is that most anime isn't even broadcast in full 1080p resolution in Japan, meaning that these streams will possibly be an upscale from either 720p or 1080i resolution instead, which offers an improvement in quality over 720p but perhaps not as striking as it might sound in most cases.  Regardless of this, we'll be taking a look to see how these 1080p streams look in due course, and our first impressions of this new streaming quality setting from episode one of Nisemonogatari are most certainly favourable.

EDIT: Crunchyroll have now confirmed that their 1080p episodes are native resolution assets and not upscaled:

"As far as 1080p goes the bitrate is about 2 times that of 720p and we only offer 1080p if we truly have the appropriate source. No upscaling!"

Will you be looking to watch anime in 1080p in Crunchyroll in the future? Do you even have enough Internets to do so?  Let us know!
