02/11/2009:

London opens crossing with cosplayers

Fans part of Japanese inspired pedestrian crossing

What could only be described as a slow PR day for the London Mayor, Boris Johnson has opened this morning the new X-crossing in Oxford Circus, inspired by the Japanese crossing and helped with a parade of cosplayers and taiko drums.

The crossing was officially opened at 9:45am this morning and in homage to the Japanese inspiration, the mayor struck a two-metre high cymbal as takio drums played in the street. “A giant X, in the form of 60m (196ft) of red ribbon will then be unfurled by devotees of cult Japanese Manga characters dressed in colourful costumes.”

It is an odd reason to have a celebration.
